01 What Epsom Salt Is
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. Each crystal combines magnesium and sulfate with seven water molecules held in its structure, which chemists write as MgSO₄·7H₂O.
The name comes from Epsom, England, where mineral-rich spring water became known centuries ago. Today, cosmetic and USP-grade magnesium sulfate can be produced and purified to a consistent specification. The finished crystals are clear to white, odorless, and highly soluble in water.
By molecular mass, the heptahydrate is about 9.9% elemental magnesium. That figure describes the crystal’s chemistry. For a mineral soak, its practical strengths are more immediate: it measures easily, dissolves cleanly, and gives the formula a familiar mineral base.
02 Why It Belongs in a Mineral Soak
When Epsom salt meets warm water, the crystal separates into hydrated magnesium and sulfate ions. That high solubility helps the salt disperse throughout the bath instead of settling heavily at the bottom.

05 How to Use the Mineral Soak
- Run the water comfortably warm. Use a temperature that feels good to your skin.
- Add roughly a half cup per standard tub. Pour the crystals under running water so the blend disperses.
- Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Adjust the time if your skin feels uncomfortable.
- Rinse briefly, then pat dry. Leave skin slightly damp before applying a favorite body oil or balm.
- For a foot soak, use a quarter cup. Add it to a comfortably warm basin and stir until dissolved.
For external use only. Avoid broken or actively irritated skin, and stop if stinging or irritation develops. If you are pregnant, have reduced heat sensation, or manage a skin or medical condition, ask your clinician whether a mineral soak fits your situation.

Is Epsom salt the same as table salt?
No. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Table salt is sodium chloride. They have different chemistry and are used differently in a mineral-soak formula.
Is Epsom salt the same as magnesium chloride?
No. Both contain magnesium, but Epsom salt pairs it with sulfate while magnesium chloride pairs it with chloride. Thrive Vitality uses both because their mineral forms are complementary.
Why use more than one mineral salt?
